Rock Hill Theatre is searching to fill designer roles for Season 50 productions! Thank you for your interest, we hope to get you involved early on so you can be a part of the whole production process! You might not get the exact show expected, but we will do our best to get your preference, and use your best strengths!

If you are asking yourself - “I don’t know how to lead as a head designer” - No worries. We can try out best to put you as an assistant designer under someone with more experience

Note: DESIGNER POSITIONS ARE CURRENTLY VOLUNTEER, unless otherwise stated.

  • Assistant Director: Shall work closely and under the Director. They shall assist with director responsibilities during auditions, rehearsals, performances, etc

    Choreographer: Must have a strong dance background in order to lead a large ensemble in dance numbers. Must be able to understand the group’s skill levels that best suits the production. Shall work closely with the directors to ensure the integrity of the show is met. Responsible for pre-show cast warm ups along with all major and incidental dances in the production. (stipend based on experience)

    Stage Manager: Shall work closely with the Director and production team. Must be very organized and able to maintain prompt books, rehearsal reports, cast & crew communication, cue sheets, etc. Responsible for calling cast and crew during the run of performances. The “Backbone” of the production. (stipend based on experience)

    Set Designer/Build: Provide some basic set sketches & designs. Set construction and build. Some construction and painting knowledge. Able to lift 50lbs for safety. You may recruit help, or let us know when you will have a build day, so we can possibly ask for volunteers in advance! (i.e. build, load-in, paint, set dress, strike, etc) Maintenance of set may be required during the run of performances. Must have availability to set inventory scouting dates.

    Lighting Designer/Operator: Able to produce or have a strong understanding of a basic lighting plot. Comfortable working with LEDs and lightboard provided. Familiarity with hanging lights, running cables, patching lights into lightboard and setting focus. Lighting Designer must be available for tech week to set production lighting cues. Proper equipment care is important! Must have availability to set inventory scouting dates.

    Costume Designer: Basic costume needs, such as sizing & measuring cast members. Able to make basic sewing alterations and create character costume inspiration boards. You may recruit help if needed. Maintenance of costumes may be required during the run of performances. Must have availability to set inventory scouting dates.

    Props Manager: Have a strong understanding of production prop needs, in coordination with the Stage Manager. Must be able to scout, find or make props necessary. You may recruit help, or let us know when you will have a “make props” day, so we can possibly ask for volunteers in advance! Must have availability to set inventory scouting dates.

    Sound Designer/Operator: Able to produce or have a strong understanding of basic sound design & cues. Comfortable working in QLab. Familiarity with setting microphones, running cables, testing sound and managing soundboard. Sound Designer must be available for tech week to set production sound cues. Proper equipment care is important!

    Makeup Designer: Basic understanding of Stage Makeup and application skills, with a general understanding of Special Effects Makeup. Must be able to explain and execute in order to enhance or alter the appearance of people. Must know basic makeup hygiene, equipment cleaning and sanitation skills for the safety of performers. 

    Backstage Crew: Responsible for orderly maintenance of backstage. Must be able to move set pieces and actively listen to stage directions from the Stage Manager. Stagehand must be respectful and professional during the run of productions. The “production ninja” that makes sure things run smoothly.
